Frequently Asked Questions

  • A Clinical Psychologist holds a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.), representing the highest level of training in mental health. My Ph.D. required six years of post-graduate study, followed by a 2,000-hour postdoctoral residency, emphasizing both clinical practice and scientific research. This background allows me to integrate the art of therapy with the science of the brain and psychology. My training includes exposure to severe psychopathology and the ability to conduct psychological assessments and research.

  • I describe my approach as a form of integrative depth psychology, built on a framework I’ve developed called The Six Attachment Needs.

This means I bridge the gap between the science of the brain and the health of the emotional self. My orientation is grounded in the belief that symptoms like anxiety, depression, or relationship conflict are not random defects, but rather protective responses from your nervous system.

I combine the precision of neuroscience and behavioral therapies such as Mindfulness-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (to help you regulate your body) with the transformative power of Internal Family Systems and Attachment Theory (to help you understand your mind and history). The goal is not just to "manage" your problems, but to integrate the fragmented parts of your experience so you can move forward while living within your values and with a sense of wholeness.

You will also find that I am an active, relational therapist. I am not a "blank slate" who simply nods in silence. I am a real person in the room with you who is interactive, direct, and deeply invested in your growth. I genuinely care about my clients and I view therapy as a collaborative partnership where we work together to help you build a life that feels authentic and safe.

  • The majority of services are provided via telehealth (video therapy or telephone). I do not offer therapeutic support over email or text and reserve that for time during scheduled sessions.

  • Research consistently shows that the quality of the relationship between client and therapist is the strongest predictor of success and more important than any specific technique. You need to feel safe, understood, and respected in order to do this work.

I offer a free 20 minute phone consultation so we can get a sense of one another before committing to a full session.

  • In the first session I will initially explain confidentiality, fees, and other “housekeeping” issues, as well as any questions you may have about the structure of therapy.

Next, it is important to explore what’s most important to you. I wonder about what brings you to therapy at this time? How would you like to feel differently? What would be meaningful about change? If open-ended questions are confusing or difficult, that's no problem, we’ll figure it out together.

I will facilitate by asking questions about your present and past and will be curious about many aspects of your life, such as factors that contribute to or erode psychological, physical, social, and spiritual health.

You will notice I make observations throughout sessions and ask insightful questions. I may make predictions or interpretations. I will ask your thoughts and feelings about all sorts of things. Occasionally, I will ask your feedback about our work together so I can best meet your needs. I will teach skills and provide specific instructions as needed. I frequently make recommendations about things to do or ideas to consider between sessions.

You will find I am kind, calm, reliable, have healthy boundaries, and I am able to hold people in their pain as well as share in their delight. My goal is to help you meet your intentions, and leave therapy when you feel ready.

  • Session frequency depends on many factors, including the client’s goals and the scope of the issues to be addressed.

In the beginning, most clients find weekly sessions to be the most productive, but others need more or less support depending on their needs. More importantly, successful psychotherapy depends on maintaining the momentum of the work and is dose-dependent. In other words, to achieve deep integration rather than just temporary relief, consistency is key - especially in the early stages.

As therapy progresses, you’ll sense that therapy has been successful when you feel less distress, more energy, interest, and enthusiasm about life - as well as the confidence to tackle new challenges on their own.

It is important to share your preference for frequency of therapy, or if you feel you no longer are benefiting from therapy. I will be open and objective about what I feel will be most beneficial for you. I encourage patients to terminate therapy as soon as they feel ready, or if it feels therapy is no longer effective.

  • I am an Out-of-Network provider. This means I do not bill insurance companies directly.

Operating out-of-network allows us to prioritize your privacy and care without the constraints of managed care. Insurance companies often mandate a specific diagnosis and dictate the length or type of treatment, which may not align with a holistic or non-pathologizing approach.

However, many insurance plans (PPO) will reimburse a significant percentage of your therapy costs. I can provide you with a monthly "Superbill" (a medical receipt) that you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement. I recommend calling your insurance provider to ask: "What is my reimbursement rate for an out-of-network Licensed Psychologist?" If they ask for a CPT code you can say “90834,” which is medical terminology for approximately 50 minutes of psychotherapy.

  • Individual and couples sessions are presently $215 per 50 minute telehealth session. Longer sessions are available at a pro-rated amount. Fees are due at the beginning of each session.

The time allocated to you is reserved especially for you. Being on-time is greatly appreciated and I do my best to arrive promptly for every session. If you arrive late we will use the remaining scheduled time and you will be charged for a full session. If I arrive late, I will make up as much time as possible at the end of the session or offer a pro-rated discount.

Sliding Scale: Sliding scale is based on pre-tax annual income, or combined income if married. If your annual income is <$50k the fee is $150. If <$70k it is $180. Income above $70K is full fee. When using a sliding scale we review your income every six months and it is based on your honorable self-report; no proof is required. This fee is consistent session to session until a six month review period, or unless the client informs me of an increase in income.

Expert Witness Fees: Contact me for my forensic fee agreement.

Forms of Payment: Credit card, check, cash, Zelle, Venmo, PayPal, BTC, or ETH.

On occasion and with advanced notice, my fee is raised to keep pace with monetary inflation and to reflect market values and professional experience.
